Navi Mumbai doc
booked under PCPNDT Act

NAVI MUMBAI: Eleven Maharashtra-based doctors, who were booked
under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, include
one doctor from Navi Mumbai too.
Gynaecologist
Dr Sujit Dange is the doctor from Navi Mumbai who was booked in June 2011 for
not maintaining any records of tests conducted on pregnant women. Several
errors were also found in his documentation. The Maharashtra Medical Council
(MMC) has slapped him with show-cause notice and is awaiting his reply.
Chargesheet has been filed against the doctor. He will be given a chance to put
forward his side in a hearing, after which his licence might be suspended.
In
all, the MMC has taken action against 76 doctors from across the state for
violating the PCPNDT Act in the last one year. Of these, 25 doctors were given
a warning, 35 doctors faced suspension of licenses and a doctor was ousted from
the council. Doctors cannot continue to practice without a valid registration
from MMC.
Under
the PCPNDT Act, doctors’ licences can be suspended even before the court issues
an order and the council does not have to wait till the accused is convicted.
Suspension
and cancellation of registration act as deterrents for those who indulge in
wrong practices. It seems that the state government is now seriously
considering the social aspect of female foeticide, which is the root cause of
all problems.
