The Host
The Host is an American
science fiction film, adapted from Stephenie
Meyer's novel of the same name. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, and Jake Abel. The film has been generally
panned by critics and performed modestly in box office sales.
The Host, written and
adapted from Meyer’s science fiction novel of the same name, takes place in
the not-so-distant future when a species of peaceful parasites who call
themselves “Souls” have invaded the
planet. The Souls only leave one
signature mark on their hosts: a pair of glowing blue eyes.
Melanie Stryder (Saoirse
Ronan), a human who has managed to evade capture after the initial waves of
invasion, is eventually caught by The
Seeker (Diane Kruger), whose
personal mission is to find any remaining pockets of resistance. Melanie’s body is then infused with a Soul called Wanderer, nicknamed Wanda,
but she ends up surviving the process.
She spends the majority of the
film struggling to take back control of her body. Wanda can still hear Melanie’s
thoughts, though. She looks a bit schizophrenic when she blatantly walks to the
edge of the frame to hold a nice little conversation with Melanie’s thoughts.
Of course, it would not be a true
Meyer story without the classic love
triangle. Even though Melanie is
still in love with her boyfriend, Wanda starts
to fall for Ian (Jake Abel).
Her mind is a virtual
battleground with witty banter such as, “Don’t kiss him!” “Yes, I will!” “No,
you won’t!” Let’s just say it is hard to focus on the actual story when
dialogue such as, “Sleep with me. Now,” is making you cringe. While all of this
turmoil is going on inside of her head, her body gets to make out with two
attractive guys. What a predicament.
The story of the movie is
interesting.
