By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Bhupesh Gupta, a cable operator from Navi Mumbai, has been arrested by the crime branch in connection with the murder case of Vashi-based builder Sunil Kumar Loharia, who was shot dead on February 16.
Gupta has been remanded to police custody till May 5. Gupta and Loharia were both competitors and had differences with each other. They had even gone to the extent of lodging complaints against each other at the police station. Gupta had got Loharia arrested too once.
At present the police are interrogating Gupta. During the investigation, the police got the feeling that this murder case has some underworld connection. But nothing has become clear yet.
Altogether nine persons have been arrested in connection with this case. There is a likelihood of charge sheet being filed very soon by crime branch.
According to the police, Sunil Kumar Loharia had named his killers before he died. Bhupesh Gupta was one of the names he had revealed. At attempt was made to kill Loharia instantly but somehow Loharia managed to reveal the names of the killers before breathing his last.
When Gupta’s name had cropped up during the investigation, the police tried to arrest Gupta but he was found absconding. But some informant gave a tip off to the police and informed about the whereabouts of Gupta. This is how the police managed to arrest Gupta. He was made to appear in the court where he was remanded to police custody till May 5.
In the meanwhile another suspect Bijlani is also absconding and he had appealed to the Supreme Court. But police are hopeful of arresting him too very soon. Only when Bijlani and Garg are arrested the police might be in a position to know the motive behind the crime.
