Dinesh Kamath's old article on Aishwarya Rai that was published in Newsband

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is a name that spells magic, not only in Bollywood but also in Hollywood. The glamour queen is always in demand. Aishwarya was offered umpteen roles by Hollywood directors, but she was never free enough to accept all of them due to her already busy schedule in Bollywood films. Aishwarya has been offered roles by Bret Ratner. She has been offered roles in big flicks such as Wolf Gang and Rush Hour. Petersen had offered her the role opposite Brad Pitt in Troy. But Aishwarya had to back out due to too many intimate scenes in the flick, which Aishwarya was not very comfortable doing. Will Smith, the great actor from Hollywood, had offered her roles in Hancock and Seven Pounds, which she couldn't accept due to date problems. Michael Douglas had offered her a great role and had the script for her to read. Aishwarya was unable to bag these roles due to prior and busy commitments in Bollywood. Had Aishwarya accepted all these Hollywood offers she would have become a greater International celebrity. In both Hollywood and Bollywood, Aishwarya has gained it all, right from love, adulation, respect, stardom, and best of all the courage to live with all this with her head held high.
Aishwarya, Shah Rukh Khan and Angelina Jolie are the three celebrities who have their wax statues displayed in the museums. Aishwarya has got two wax statues - one in sari in London museum while the other one is in a salwar kurti in the New York museum. Some are of the opinion that the New York museum could hardly capture the beauty of Aishwarya who is famous all over the world for her ravishing looks.
People tend to compare Shah Rukh-Aishwarya starrer Devdas with Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer 3 Idiots since both are adaptation of the books. Devdas was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's brain child. It was a tale of a dying lover. In this film Shah Rukh had teamed up with the gorgeous Aishwarya to resurrect the romance of the bygone era. When Devdas (Shah Rukh) was ripped apart from his ethereal Paro (Aishwarya Rai), a Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit) lent him his socially dishonourable shoulders. The end was painful as Devdas breathed his last outside the doorsteps of his childhood love Paro. Now this tale is compared with the story of 3 Idiots. Aamir, by virtue of this film, earned astounding success. Raju Hirani excellently depicted the way Aamir and his two friends rattled the engineering college rules. Kareena looked hypnotic as she played a geeky woman in a small yet extremely significant role. The film depicted her as locking her lips with dashing Aamir and thus earning huge success. Now it is left to the readers to decide as to which of these two movies is a better adaptation of a book.
At 36, Aishwarya still remains a spotless beauty. She has bagged the top spot in Bollywood for many years and has now comfortably stepped into her own niche while the younger beauties like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are vying for the roost.
Once named the ninth most beautiful woman in the world, Aishwarya is still a stunner as is evident from the stills of her upcoming Tamil movie Endhiran. Directed by Shankar, the film is a sci-fi thriller starring Aishwarya and Rajnikant. It is touted as the most expensive movie to be made in India so far, with its budget touching the whopping figure of Rs 165 crores. Although Mani Ratnam's Raavan has been written off by critics as a drag, Aishwarya is walking distinctly confident at all major circuits in and around India as well as in the West.
Aishwarya has now barged into a different mind set from the romantic flick genres. You might soon find Aishwarya portraying a role of a World war II spy in the flick Spy Princess.
Aishwarya is said to be in good terms with Mani Ratnam's wife, Suhasini Ratnam. Although the film Raavan had to bite the dust at the box office, things between Aishwarya and the director's wife are in amazingly good level. Suhasini Ratnam might direct Aishwarya in her next project which will be her directorial debut.
All the fans of Aishwarya who are waiting to see their idol after Raavan will have to wait for her next releases like Action Replay, Guzaarish, Endhiran etc. Although Katrina Kaif is ruling the roost in Bollywood, Aishwarya is known as the film industry's established veteran with a cemented footing in the industry. That was the reason why there was hype and hoopla surrounding her film Raavan. But the film flopped badly. This has made Aishwarya look grim and dismal. She has asked her PR machinery to stay silent till the gloomy phase gets over and things freshen up with newer prospects ahead. Hits and misses are part and parcel of this rat-race world. Hence one flop cannot erode the accolades and fame Aishwarya has generated over the past one and a half decade. Aishwarya is now awaiting a bright sunshine after clouds of darkness and despair part away.
Despite being a celebrated actress in Bollywood, Aishwarya's career in English movies has refused to take an upturn since she has not been able to do a meaty role yet. The mesmeric-eyed woman has confessed that she doesn't have the time to acknowledge the roles being offered to her owing to her hectic Bollywood schedule. Let's hope that Aishwarya does take time from her busy schedule and give a thought to her Hollywood career so that her plethoric fans abroad finally get a chance to see their dazzling actress on the celluloid in a full-fledged Hollywood movie.
Aishwarya has got something extraordinary about her, which makes her the first choice for any Bollywood or Hollywood film maker. But she personally finds the best for her in the Bollywood. There is no doubt about one thing and that is Aishwarya is bound to remain on top in Bollywood for a couple of years more at least. I won't be surprised if she continues to excel for longer time than that too. However, I wish Aishwarya good luck for the future!
