Dinesh Kamath's old article on Katrina Kaif which was published in Newsband

Katrina Kaif is one Bollywood actress who is most searched celebrity on the mobile phones and has beaten the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Aishwarya Rai. The research was conducted by mBit Infotech, a Value Added Service (VAS) provider. Among the Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities, Katrina is on the number one spot followed by Angelina Jolie, Kareena, Shah Rukh, Salman, Bipasha, Aishwarya, Monica Bellucci and Aamir Khan. CEO of mBit Infotech is amazed to see that Katrina is ruling the charts with a major pie. Katrina's popularity is mounting for both national and international audiences. The research is based on the searches performed by over 120,000 users of mBit in the first quarter of 2010.and it is found out that 'sex' is still the most popular searched keyword followed by music.
Katrina Kaif thought that she was confused with someone else when filmmaker Prakash Jha approached her for the film Rajneeti. Her first expression was of shock. But willing to prove herself, Katrina took the plunge and said yes to the film. Katrina's role is modeled on Mahabharata's Draupadi as she is the only female character among the bunch of other actors like Naseeruddin Shan, Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpai, Arjun Rampal and Ranbir Kapoor. Katrina did a lot of homework and hard work for this role. For her, reciting lines in pure Hindi wasn't easy. Even portraying a complex character like that of a politician was a difficult job for her. Till now she has played all the light romantic character, and now after doing Rajneeti, she knows she has taken a big leap. It appears that her acting display in Rajneeti is going to prove to be the coming of age performance for her.
Katrina, with her 1000 watt smile and hourglass figure, has mesmerized millions of males. She can indeed be called Femme Fatale. Her tomboyish nature is on full display these days. The sexiest kitten of Bollywood recently revealed her childhood desire to become a fire fighter or a stunt woman. She is all set to play the role of an army woman on Big Screen. After Rajneeti, the next flick of Katrina will be a movie in which she joins an army in a storyline pretty reminiscent of Goldie Hawn from 1980's Private Benjamin. Katrina loves doing that. She always loved doing things which she was told girls can't or shouldn't do. In her family, all of them were sisters who grew up with one brother in their midst and he would do fun things while the girls were expected to do girlie things like playing with dolls and learning cooking. But Katrina didn't like this policy. While shooting for Rajneeti also, she showed off her footworks in a game of cricket as she took a bat and faced a shirtless Ranbir Kapoor bowling with hot pace. She did this after her crew members, Prakash Jha and Ranbir said that the cricket games on location were not for her. She proved them wrong. The film which Katrina will also produce will see her playing a somewhat zany character bumbling through a man's world using her instincts to rise above gender politics. Katrina believes that even a woman can play cricket and join the army. So as far as playing the odd-woman-out trying to find her way through a gender-biased world is concerned, Katrina seems quite at home. She is used to doing that. Katrina will give the film on army life priority over the remake of the French film whose rights she recently purchased.
The role that made audiences sit up and say Katrina can deliver a nuanced performance came in a film that dealt with the most globally recognized image of terror – the 9/11 attacks on US soil. In the film New York, playing the wife of a terrorist, a wife forced to discover his real identity after an idyllic sunny marriage, was a difficult role but Katrina played it with absolute ease. She just followed the director Kabir Khan who had made a documentary on this subject and had a lot of knowledge about it.
Katrina was recently addressing the After Hrs team. She was the Guest Editor for Anti-Terrorism Day. Some found her an unlikely choice since Katrina had never really portrayed brawny characters combating The Enemy, nor does she have absolute command over Hindi that she can verbally demolish The Bad Guy onscreen. Maybe she was chosen for that role because she was born in Hong Kong, and went to Japan, Switzerland, Poland, London and then India. She is very much a citizen of the world. She had an upbringing that encompassed the globe. Terror knows no boundaries either. And next she had played in New York the role of an ordinary citizen who is a wife and mother and who discovers her world torn apart by terror and its consequences and its destructive power.
Katrina is not scared of too many things. As a woman she is afraid of simple things like being alone at home, not having her family around. But she is not afraid of being kidnapped or things like that because these things are sudden and in one's destiny and hence you can't be scared of such things. There is a message in this attitude of hers, not so much about destiny, more about being fearless. In the world turning bizarrely insecure, she has learnt to be a lot stronger. Katrina is a Cancerian and hence is over-emotional. She can cry at the drop of a hat. But then she tries to reason things with herself and get out of it.
Katrina has been a victim of racial discrimination because of her accent. When she comes to India they think she has a British accent. When she goes to Britain, her family laughs at her as they think she has an Indian accent. And when she goes to USA, they think she has a Canadian accent. Her sister thinks that her English is completely adulterated. And many people in India do not understand at all what she speaks. Akshay Kumar so many times never understood a word that she had said.
So that's all I can tell you about Katrina today. I'll give you still more information about her tomorrow. Until then, good bye!
