Dinesh Kamath's review of the film 'Diary of a Butterfly' that was published in Newsband

Diary Of A Butterfly is a factual based movie, directed by Vinod Mukhi and written by Asad Ajmeri. Vinod Mukhi has earlier directed films like Cabaret and www.Love.com.
The movie stars Udita Goswami as a female protagonist, who made her debut in Pooja Bhatt film Paap opposite John Abraham. Recently she was seen in movies like Rokkk (2010), Apartment: Rent at Your Own Risk (2010), and Chase (2010).
The movie is produced by Anil Dalmia and Rakesh Sabharwal, under the banner of Bhaggyashri Productions in association with Prince Movies.
The movie has an interesting story. The film narrates a story about a girl named Gul, who starts her journey for success from her hometown Jaipur. She is hungry for success so she decides to go to the city of dreams, Mumbai. When she is leaving for Mumbai, her mother gives her a Diary. She says to Gul that it will be very helpful if she records her day to day activities in the Diary. She also gives her a Note, on which there are some knowledgeable lines written.
In Mumbai she works for a Fashion House. She stays with her friends Piya, who works an as accountant in the same Fashion House, and with Carol, who is an owner of a Spa.
When she starts her journey in Mumbai she forgets each and every relationship in the thirst for success. She uses people as stairs in her journey of life in order to reach to the top. She even takes the Diary and the Note as a joke. But when she reaches the peak, she finds out that while running for success she has hurt many people knowingly or sometimes even without any intention. She had abused many people who tried to correct her and now currently she has nobody to celebrate her new found success. Her errant and reckless lifestyle and line approach to achieve her goal made her lose every friend in life.
So she starts reading her Diary from the start just to find out if she has treated someone to the worst degree. Also the Notes Lines starts ringing in her head helping her realize her mistakes and also telling her to apologize to them.
When she decides to correct all the mistakes she has made in the past i.e. to apologize to each and everyone she has hurt, she finds out the truth about Mumbai and the Corporate World. She is so shocked seeing the response of the people that she decides to stay the way she is. She also refuses to listen to her Mother because she thinks because of the Diary and the Note she went to correct things which in-turn became a joke on herself.
Thus Gul is shown as a character who is arrogant, reckless, social and a dreamer who will continue her journey for more success but in her own way.
The film has Udita Goswami as Gul, Rati Agnihotri as Shobha, Rajesh Khattar as Xavier, Harsh Chhaya as Vivek, Naseer Abdullah as Gul's father, Sofia Hayat as Carol, Rajeev Singh as Aran, Aryan Vaid as Ravi Bajaj, Ronny Jhutti as Adi, Gaurav Dixit as Aakash, Sneha Belani as Pia and Johnny Nirmal as Delete Singh.
The film is written by Vinod Mukhi and screenplay is by Asad Ajmeri. Cinematography is by Mohan Verma and Mohan Prajapati and background score is by Dhruv Dhalla.
The music of the movie is composed by Taz – Stereonation, Mukhtar Sahota and Shibani Kashyap, whereas the lyrics have been penned down by Arif Lohar, Arko and Virag Mishra. The singers are lined up as Taz – Stereonation, Arif Lohar, Shibani Kashyap, Vasuda Sharma, Akriti Kakkar and Apeksha Dandekar.
The film has songs like We Don't Need Boys sung by Akriti Kakkar, Apeksha Dandekar, Jugni by Arif Lohar, Hor Pila De by Taz-Stereo Nation, Hungama Ho Gaya by Shibani Kashyap and Jugni Dhol Mix by Arif Lohar.
Udita Goswami who was last seen in film Chase has shot this new film Diary Of A Butterfly which is a unique story of a journey of a girl, being directed by ad film maker Vinod Mukhi and produced by Rakesh Sabarwal. Udita herself maintains a diary since last four years so it's an interesting co-incidence that she got such a film where the main protagonist maintains a diary. She fell in love with the title of the film as well as the script which is very appealing. She had gone missing post Chase because she was busy with her shows and appearances as well as her private graduation (B. com) classes. The songs picturized on her in films like Jhalak Dikla Ja (Aksar), Agar Tum Mil Jao and Woh Lamhe Woh Baatein (Zeher) and Laagi Tujh Se Maan Ki Lagan (Paap) are extremely popular still and Udita keeps on performing in shows all over the world. She is here to do good films and she is very serious about her acting career.
The film is based on the Nira Radia 2G scam. Anil Dalmia and Manoj Nandwana, producer and distributor respectively, of the film Diary Of A Butterfly, were getting threatening calls from Pakistan - to not release the film in India. Both Dalmia and Nandwana then registered a complaint in the Oshiwara Police Station in Mumbai, and mentioned that they were getting threatening calls from various numbers with the ISD codes belonging to Pakistan. When they were getting these calls, they came to know that it is a Pakistan number. Initially, they thought it must be a prank call. A woman named Rehana D'Souza started repeatedly calling Nandwana and sending him abusive messages, so he approached the police and registered a complaint at the Oshiwara Police Station. When he stopped taking the calls from one particular number, they started using another number. The lady also said that she will complain about his abusive behaviour and will register a complaint against him. This woman has been asking him not to release the film, and that if he did, he should be ready to face the consequences. Since then, he had stopped taking calls from that number. Somebody called him on his landline number. As the film is inspired by the Nira Radia case and has some shades of political lobbying, it might bring the case into limelight again. And there are people who don't want that to happen.
The dreamy eyed girl Udita Goswami features in the film. Another gorgeous actress Rati Agnihotri is playing the mother's character. Udita has finally got a role where she can flaunt her acting skills rather than just doing a skin show. So far, Udita has remained in the public view for her bare back photo shoots than her performances in films. In Diary of a Butterfly, she has wonderfully played the character Gul, a success hungry girl who can go to any extent to achieve her dreams. If she proves to be a success in this film, she can then think of starting a fresh inning in Bollywood. Plus Udita also had a good chance to learn something from veteran actress like Rati Agnihotri.
Thus the film Diary of a Butterfly is a very interesting film. Do watch it.
