3 animal rights activists from Navi Mumbai Awarded
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Three women of Navi Mumbai, who are animal rights activists, were conferred upon the Women Achievers Awards at Powai during International Women's Day on Thursday.
These three activists are Aditi Lahiri, Roshni Majumdar and Rinki Banerji. They were awarded for bravely fighting for the cause of animal welfare in Navi Mumbai. The award function was organised by Young Environmentalists Programme Trust.
Aditi Lahiri is a cancer patient but yet she makes time to help stray animals in Navi Mumbai. She has been doing this noble job for over 10 years. Aditi finds it tough to fight for stray dogs and cats, since there are many animal haters who display open hostility towards animals. They even poison these poor animals to death. Aditi feels that there should be proper animal centres to carry out effective sterilizations of the strays. She fails to understand as to why humans are unable to show love and affection for these mute animals.
Roshni Majumdar is a MBA student. A few days back, she was in the news when she was beaten up and molested by hooligans in Sanpada. They harmed her badly only because she went to the rescue of and began feeding an injured stray dog. Six young persons attacked her and her cousin. But she was brave enough to get these goons arrested. Her cousin against whom a false police complaint was lodged had to undergo untold harassment.
Rinki Banerji also underwent somewhat similar experience when she was assaulted by a mob of animal-haters in New Panvel. She too had gone to the rescue of the stray dogs.
Organiser Elsie Gabriel of YEPT was all praise for these three ladies of Navi Mumbai who deservedly won awards for bravely displaying their love and affection for animals and for fighting for their rights.
