CIDCO to finance the new bridge?
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd (MSRDC) is coming up with a 1.8-km six-lane bridge on the Vashi creek. There is a possibility of City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) too financing this project. A plan has been worked out to widen Sion-Panvel highway to ease the flow of traffic.
At present Mumbai is connected to Navi Mumbai and subsequently to Pune and Goa highways by the 6-lane Sion Panvel highway. Converting of this highway into a 10-lane highway has been planned. But there is a danger of traffic problems occurring on the Vashi Creek bridge during the widening process. Hence MSRDC has decided to build another bridge under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Half the cost will be borne by both Central and State government. The other half is supposed to be borne by MSRDC which finds it too much.
MSRDC did approach Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to grant them some funds for this project but MMRDA refused. After that MSRDC had no other option but to approach CIDCO whom it asked to bear half the cost. CIDCO did agree verbally but it has yet to take a final decision on funding to the project. The board of directors of CIDCO will soon meet and decide over this matter.
