Saniya is a young, catholic girl living in a typical orthodox catholic family. She is enthusiastic and free soul from Goa. She loves nature and is free from the materialistic desires. Her innocence, naive nature and intuitive actions make her innocent.
Saniya is being pursued by her mother for marriage. Saniya is least interested and thinks that love should drive her to get married.
Anand is a typical metropolitan executive from the corporate world. Though he is sensitive and sensible, he is trapped in the calculative world of business. He is commissioned as a Manager in a Mine in Goa.
Accidently, Saniya and Anand meet at a party where they connect instantly. Anand is impressed by Saniya’s free nature and clear understanding about “love, sex and marriage”. According to her, they all are independent. Leading to discussions, Anand and Saniya get comfortable and end up having a one night stand.
Sujit is Anand’s colleague and they both share a good understanding and friendship. Malavika is Anand’s boss’s daughter and has infatuation towards Anand while Anand feels that he needs to concentrate on climbing up the corporate ladder rather than getting married.
One fine day, Anand and Saniya find themselves at a crossroads where Anand is confused while taking a personal decision with professional one whereas Sania is confident on her part. Anand’s decision might affect Sania’s life and vice versa.
What happens between Anand and Saniya? What surprises lie for Anand and Saniya?
It’s a story of a search for real love! What is real love, attraction, affection, seduction, possession, lust or responsibility? Premsutra answers the question.

First love in anyone’s life holds a special place especially if the memory is filled with the vibrant musings of the city that you grew up in. Benaras holds a special place in Kundan’s heart, because not only did he grow up as a typical, god fearing, shiv bhakt-Pandit but also because it was the city that gave him Zoya.
Quiet, beautiful with mischievous eyes, Zoya was the girl of his dreams. She was alike a breath of fresh air the first time he saw her on the busy streets, sitting regally in a Tonga. He would follow her everyday to the bazaar, back to her house till one day he mustered the courage to speak to her and tell her his true feelings - his 13year old heart, smitten by her simplicity.
She of course didn't take him seriously and brushed him off. Time passed by and Zoya moved to Delhi to study further. Love they say is a feeling that only grows stronger with time and Kundan’s love for Zoya never diminished, he carried his feeling all through college and his heart flipped when Zoya came back to his town.
With Zoya back in Benaras, Kundan’s world was filled with excitement as he was thinking of finally telling her as to how he felt. Zoya finally met Kundan and confessed her true feelings to him. She was in LOVE! She was in love with Akram, a college friend from Delhi university and he was the love of her life and she wanted Kundan’s help in marrying him.
His world shattered and his heart broke a million pieces, the rage that Kundan felt was inexplicable. He was torn between his true feelings for Zoya and his hearts pleas to help her get her true love because who could understand that pain better than him.
He sets out to unite her with Akram and what follows is a tale of love, betrayal, redemption and healing set against the very rooted town of Benaras and the upbeat political environs of Delhi.
Thus Ranjhana is the story of Kundan, his journey from a 13 year old boy in love who goes on to become a committed, spirited young man, who’s experiences in life made him the person he is today. It’s the story of love.
The film has Dhanush as Kundan, Sonam Kapoor as Zoya, Abhay Deol as Akram, Swara Bhaskar as Bindiya, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Shilpi Marwaha as Rashmi, Suraj Singh as Anand, Kumud Mishra and Deepika Amin.
The music of the film is by A. R. Rahman. All lyrics are written by Irshad Kamil. The film has songs like Raanjhanaa, Banarasiya, Piya Milenge, Ay Sakhi, Nazar Laaye, Tu Mun Shudi, Aise Na Dekho, The Land of Shiva and Tum Tak.
