How to tackle crime in the city – the residents speak
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Rise in crime rate in Navi Mumbai is worrying the residents. The police department is trying hard to curb crimes. But criminals seem to be stubborn and uncontrollable. Here are some of the views on how to control crimes passed on by Navi Mumbai residents.
Sheela Sharma of Nerul: The police should hold workshops to educate citizens on how to prevent crimes so that even the citizens can join hands with the policemen to curb crime in the city. The written laws should be implemented and not just read. This will create fear in the minds of criminals who will think thousand times before committing a crime. Today we find criminals indulging in crime fearlessly because of the improper implementation of written laws. Citizens of Navi Mumbai should be asked to cooperate with the police by passing on the information about the criminal activities taking place in the city so that the police can rush to that spot where the crime is taking place and nab the criminals.
Santosh Kumar of Turbhe: The police should not only become active whenever a major crime takes place in the city but they should also tackle petty crimes like chain snatching, pickpocketing, molestation, burglary and so on. It is when the small criminal cases are solved that the bigger crimes can be prevented or easily tackled. The police department should be adequately staffed. This department should be equipped with enough manpower and ammunitions. The vacant posts in the Navi Mumbai police department should be filled immediately. The government should make more funds available for police work so that the policemen are able to provide full security to the citizens of the city. Enough vehicles should be provided to our policemen so that they can patrol all the sensitive regions of the city. The escape routes should be guarded for 24 hours so that no criminal who indulges in crime in the city can escape through these routes.
Sunil Parab of Vashi: One can understand if our police cannot prevent crimes taking place at night. But how is that the daylight robberies are taking place every now and then in the city? This means that there are many loopholes in our legal machinery. It is true that our policemen are doing their best to prevent crimes particularly during daytime but how can they achieve their goal if they are not adequate in number. There are more sensitive areas in the city and less policemen. There should be sufficient policemen so that none of these sensitive areas go unguarded. The police should take more stringent measures to contain the crimes. Cyber crimes and criminal activities occurring in banks should be controlled. Proper planning and strategizing are needed to curb crime in the city. CCTV and microphones should be installed in all the sensitive areas so that the crime can be prevented or if the crime gets committed the criminals can be nabbed immediately. The department meant for curbing economic crimes should be strengthened so that there won’t be any forgery cases or frauds taking place in the city.
Vijay Mishra of Airoli: Installation of CCTV cameras at all the sensitive areas will certainly reduce cases of robbery, molestation and chain snatching which are become common in the city. Women are the victims of chain snatching and they should be given training in martial arts with the help of which they can combat these criminals and prevent the occurrence of crimes. The police department of Navi Mumbai should make full use of print and electronic media to pass on to the citizens of the city the lessons on how to prevent or combat crimes. These measures, if taken, are bound to reduce considerably, if not eliminate totally, the crimes occurring in our city.
